The Energy Saving Trust report that boilers account for approximately 60 per cent of what you spend in a year on your energy bills, so an efficient oil boiler is essential and will make a big difference.

Regulations were introduced in 2007 making it compulsory for every new oil boiler installed to be condensing which meant that typically the oil boiler was energy rated C or above. However now all new oil boilers installed must be energy rated ‘A’ or ‘B’ which are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Why are new oil boilers more efficient?

Many older oil boilers are only able to achieve 60% efficiency which means that only 60p in every £1 you spend is used on the oil for your heating and hot water.  The oil boilers lose heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue and many of the older oil boilers also do not have proper controls which further reduces the oil boilers efficiency.

Modern oil boilers are more efficient for a number of reasons, but the main advantage is that they are all condensing boilers. A condensing oil boiler has a larger heat exchanger so it recovers more heat and sends cooler gases up the flue making it more efficient. A well-maintained oil boiler burns oil very efficiently. Modern oil boilers also have intelligent controls which makes a difference by enabling more cost effective management of your oil heating and hot water system.
