OFTEC

OFTEC is a trade association that works on behalf of the oil heating and cooking industry in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. OFTEC takes a lead role in setting industry standards and manages a Competent Person Registration scheme for engineers who install, commission and service oil and renewable heating and cooking equipment.

OFTEC’s aim is to promote the highest professional standards across the industry and provide efficient service and support.

OFTEC was formed in 1991 and replaced the former Domestic Oil Burner Equipment Testing Association (DOBETA), an organisation formed after the enforced split of Shell-mex and BP in the early 1970’s. The trade association continues to be exclusively oil-related, but OFTEC’s competent person scheme now includes scopes of registration for renewable technologies – reflecting the more diverse off-gas heating industry of today.

OFTEC’s trade association membership includes large manufacturers such as Aga-Rangemaster (cookers), Clarehill Plastics (Harlequin Tanks), Grant Engineering (boilers), Firebird Products (boilers), Kingspan Environmental (Titan Tanks), Riello UK (burners), Warmflow Engineering (boilers), and Worcester Bosch Group (boilers). It also includes many smaller companies and around 80 training centres.

How often will I need my boiler serviced?

• For safety and to minimise fuel costs you should arrange for a Prestige registered oil engineer to service your boiler once a year.
• An oil-fired range cooker will need to be serviced every six months.

What is a service?

Our Prestige registered oil engineers when servicing Oil appliances carry out the following:

• Fully inspect each appliance
• Clean the parts as required by the manufacturer’s instructions of each appliance
• Replace components parts if required.

If regular servicing is not undertaken long term damage can occur. During the combustion process, deposits will build up on the internal surfaces of the heat exchanger and the baffles which can decrease boiler efficiency. If left for a number of years, these deposits harden and with some designs of heat exchanger render it impossible to remove the baffles without destroying them. A replacement baffle will come at a significant cost on top of the routine service charge.
